Koen Weiss translates his emotions, experiences and needs, without interference of the mind, into movements, which provides the impetus for his dance. For the first time in his search for these movements, he opens himself to the interaction with music, especially written for this creation by Frédéric Roland. A challenge for both artists, as fascinating as they are different, they will have to go beyond their contrasts to arrive at the essential and unify their art.

Frédéric Roland obtains a bachelor’s degree in musicology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, writing a dissertation entitled “Music and painting, a shared idea- A study to compare the works of Philip Guston and Morton Feldman.

For a number of years, he devotes his time to the composition and interpretation of different stage music. Through countless encounters he plays saxophone, guitar, or sings.

At the same time, his research on music and image continues. He writes soundtracks for cinema, theatre, installations and internet sites.

He questions himself how to get out of the rigidness of the structure of “the image”, animated or not, and to get sound on stage, making it alive.

Today, the project with Koen Weiss, leads him to a different way of composing. It is carried by an interaction, a language between body/image and music. Sound leaves the studio to be confronted directly and constantly by the present moment on stage. Music becomes image.

Koen Weiss completes a course in set design at the St Luc School of Art in Brussels, after attending several other art schools where he applies himself to drawing and painting. At the same time he discovers through his Buto practice a sensibility related to the physical body and movement. For three years he works for different directors and companies on Brussels’s theatre scene. During this period, his paintings and drawings direct themselves towards the study of anatomy and portraits. He exposes a work entitled “L’homme papier collant” at the Usagexterne gallery. Through this piece, and an increasingly intense practice of Buto, he evolves towards a more interior inspection of the body, which becomes the vehicle of his emotions. From now on he concentrates himself on solo performances (his first at the Emma06 Art festival). After three silent creations, the necessity emerges to integrate and explore the universe of… music.
